Types Of Wood Destroying insects We Look For
Termites are a type of wood-destroying insect that may be found in Michigan homes. They can be found anywhere there is moist, decaying, or rotting wood and the environment they need to survive. These pests cause damage to structures by feeding on cellulose which includes paper, cardboard, insulation, and other organic materials made from plant material like trees and shrubs. Termites can live in the ground or feed on wood that is attached to a structure, such as beams, studs, and floor joists.
The carpenter ant gets its name from its habit of nesting in moist decaying wood. These pests may also infest homes where there are water leaks that cause damage to the structure. Carpenter ants are black or red in color with large brownish-black heads. They cause damage by chewing through wood, and they also feed on other insects that invade homes like termites, cockroaches, and silverfish.
These types of wood destroying insects include the powderpost beetles and the false powderpost beetles. These pests cause damage by laying eggs on wood, and their larvae, or immature stages of development, feed on the material for food. Damage from these insects is oftentimes hidden and can be found after it has spread through a large area of a home. False powder post beetles do not make tunnels like true powderpost beetles. They bore small round holes within a few days of emerging from their pupal case.
Carpenter bees are one of the more common types of wood-destroying insects found in Michigan homes. These pests cause damage by boring their way into structures to build nests where they lay eggs and raise larvae. They resemble bumblebees but can be distinguished by a shiny black abdomen that is hairless compared to the hairy thorax and abdomen of the bumblebee.
